Candidate's Corner: Cann's Platform

candidate_cannI was born and raised in Meaford however in 1994 I moved away to attend college in Toronto. After four years of college and one year of working in Toronto I moved to Hawaii to my first job in the video game industry.

After that I moved to California then to Vancouver BC and then to Florida and now as of January I’m back in Meaford.

During my stay in the States I learned a lot about economics and how the world really works. I lived in the heart of Silicon Valley during the dot com mania and crash. I witnessed the real estate bubble in California balloon up and then I saw it crash in Florida.

I believe that my experience in the US and my knowledge of economics can be very valuable to a place like Meaford. I believe that the western world is in very serious financial trouble over the next decade or so and I believe that it’s important to have people in office that understand this as we go through this time.

So now that you know a bit about me here is my platform and what I believe and what I would do if I had my way.

· I believe that you shouldn’t spend more than you take in.
· I believe in a balanced budget.
· I believe in fiscal restraint, lower taxes and less government.
· I believe that taxes are far too high and should be frozen and if possible lowered.
· I believe that there should be a hiring freeze on municipal employees.
· I believe that we should have weekly garbage pickups and I’m not a fan of paying $2 per bag either.
· I believe that there are far too many bylaws in this town, where it gets to the point that they become oppressive.
· I hear a lot of chatter about a doggie park. I believe that we have enough parks in this town for now and that something like that should only be considered if the funds were available. Even if the funds were available I would rather see the taxpayers with that money than the municipality.
· I would much rather see something like a community exercise facility with indoor swimming than a doggie park, but again only if the funds were available.
· I believe that we need to figure out where the library is going.
· I believe that we need to pay more attention to our roads because a lot of them need some TLC.
· With so many towns in this area dressing up their downtown core, I would like to see a downtown beautification project if the funds were available.
