candidate_clumpusBarb Clumpus announced her candidacy for Meaford Council on Friday, September 10, 2010

“I’m passionate about Meaford as a great place to live,” Barb said. “I’m running for Council because I want to contribute to making Meaford the best it can be now and in the future.”

Barb’s campaign will be focused on three main themes.

  1. We have to continue the work of getting our financial house in order,” Barb believes. “We all know that we have to reduce our debt and rebuild our capital reserves, without imposing excessive tax increases on our residents. I support the 5-year Financial Plan, which shows that we can return to responsible financial management in a very short time.”

  2. We have to reduce the tax burden on residents,” said Barb. “By attracting more businesses through positive economic development strategies and new residents, through responsible, environmentally sound housing development that complements our heritage, the tax load will be shared over a broader base. That will reduce the load on people living here today.”

  3. Finally, Barb’s campaign will emphasize the ongoing need to nurture a great community. “We need to continue the work of the previous Council to bring the community together. We have to get better at negotiating solutions to contentious issues before they become major crises for the community. I will work to ensure that the Municipality reaches out to anyone who wants to get involved, so that they work on things that matter, so that they have a great volunteer experience, and so that they are properly recognized for their contribution to the community.”

As a long-time resident of Meaford and committed volunteer herself, Barb feels that she can make a major contribution on Council.

“We chose Meaford as a place to live in 1998,” she said, “because we truly appreciate the many things that Meaford has to offer. Since we moved here, I’ve been the President of the Meaford and District Chamber of Commerce and the Chair of the Meaford Hall & Culture Foundation. I’ve worked on several task forces for the Municipality, including the streetscape project, the Community Improvement Plan, Communities in Bloom, developing strategies for economic development and the recent Community Services Task Force.”

Barb was honoured to be the Rotary Citizen of the Year in 2007, and won the Meaford & District Chamber of Commerce’s Peter Francis Memorial Award in 2008.

“I’m proud to call Meaford my home.” said Barb, “I’ve been very touched by the many expressions of support for my candidacy, and I would be honoured to sit on Council to contribute to making Meaford the very best place in which to live for all of us.”
