Caring is Cool For GBSS Students

gbsssignStudents at Meaford's Georgian Bay Secondary School (GBSS) have proven once again, that it is cool to care.

The school recently completed their annual 5 Days of Caring initiative which challenges students to gather non-perishable food items for donation to the Golden Town Outreach (GTO) food bank.

Points were awarded for each food item donated.  10 points for a standard food item, and 50 daily bonus points for high needs items were awarded.

“At the end of the week we had gathered over 1400 food items for the Outreach exceeding last year's total. Mr Carr's grade 12 class was the winner closely followed by Ms. Woodhouse's grade 10s,” said English teacher Amy Teed-Acres.

In addition to the food drive, Teed-Acres says that GBSS staff and students collected winter boots, mitts, and jackets and snow-pants for the GTO.

“Approximately 12 garbage bags full of clothing were donated for local families,” said Teed-Acres.

GBSS staff went even further by donating products and services for a special silent auction for staff members which raised an additional $600 in cash for the GTO.

Last week Teed-Acres grade 11 English class helped load all of the items collected onto a fire truck, and then visited the GTO food bank location to help with unloading the donations.

“GBSS is truly a school that cares!” exclaimed a proud Teed-Acres.
