OWEN SOUND, ONTARIO – Students across Grey Bruce fund-raised over $125,000 for Heart and Stroke research.
This year, 30 schools in the Bluewater District School Board, the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board and the Conseil Scolaire de District des Ecoles Catholiques due Sud-Ouest participated in Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The spotlight shines on two Owen Sound schools – Keppel Sarawak Elementary School and St. Basil’s School who really put their hearts into it! Students at Keppel Sarawak successfully fund-raised over $8,500, while St. Basil’s, a JK to Grade 3 school, raised over $8,200.
In Meaford, MCS raised almost $4,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation this year by participating in Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart.
The cause hits close to home at both schools, with fellow students having gone through heart surgeries. Parent Jodi Armstrong, who helped coordinate Jump at St. Basil’s, says it’s extremely important to support an organization that helped save her daughter’s life. “She has grown up knowing that an amazing team of people and events helped her -- she is a miracle,” says Armstrong, whose daughter was born with a congenital heart defect.
“It’s great to see the changes that have been made in heart research through the Heart and Stroke Foundation,” says Armstrong.
Other top honours go to Port Elgin-Saugeen Central, as the top fund-raising school in Grey Bruce. PESC fund-raised over $10,000 in Jump and Hoops.
Children/Youth Program Coordinator Jody Johnson says “It’s encouraging to see the students raising funds for such an important cause. Heart disease and stroke affects everyone, and these young students know they can make a difference.”
Jump and Hoops for Heart has taught millions of kids the value of getting active, staying healthy and giving back to their communities. Last year, Jump Rope for Heart raised over 9 million dollars for critical heart and stroke research and education that continues to protect and save lives.
