Street Vendors- Let the Market Decide

E-mail Print

Editor,

I have read with some interest your recent columns and letters relating to the permissibility of a vendor operating

a hot dog stand in the downtown. I am somewhat ambivalent as to the various viewpoints expressed, except that I do not agree with any statement that seeks to undermine the merits (health or otherwise) of the type of product being offered. The market determines the need for a product or service, and in the case of foods, the Health Unit and Province are responsible for the safety.

From England to Meaford

E-mail Print

Dear Editor,

I am researching my family history.  I have traced my Great Great Grandfather's sister to Meaford.  She was Matilda Inglis who was married to John Murray a shoemaker in Trowbridge Street, Meaford.  They went to Canada in 1868.  They had four surviving children - Mary, James, Catherine Beatrice and Roy Hugh.  John died in 1904 and Matilda died in 1926.  I'm fairly sure that Roy may have died about the time of WW1.

Declaring a Municipal Hot Dog Day

E-mail Print

Dear Editor,

A conflict of interest (COI) occurs when an individual or organization is involved in multiple interests, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation for an act in the other.

As a Councillor and Restaurant owner Mr. McPherson should realize that the Hot Dog stand issue for him is a Conflict of Interest. I believe his motive to request a study from the municipality staff is nothing more than a stall tactic. Our summer season is short and the Evanson's are losing valuable time.

We should declare next Friday a Municipal wide "Hot Dog Day."

Brian Johnson, Meaford

Support of Free Enterprise

E-mail Print

Editor,

I would just like to touch on the topic of free enterprise.

I just read that there seems to be some objection to the hot dog vendor opening up shop in Meaford. This is very exciting to see that Meaford is attracting new business, this is a positive sign to the failing economy and we as business owners, and tax payers should do  nothing, but encourage all new business opportunities in our municipality and NOT put up red tape and deter future business owners from re-locating to our area.
