Dear Editor,
Referring to the article “Council Approves 2012 Budget” in Tuesday’s TMI, I was taken aback by our illustrious mayor’s statement “It is on the back burner right now because everybody is waiting for the province to come in with the new rates, and we'll see where it goes from there”. “It” refers to the controversial Waste To Energy incineration project.
I don’t know who “everybody” is that the mayor is referencing in his statement. I know I certainly am not one of those “everybody” waiting for the province to come in with new rates. Therefore, his argument is flawed.
To date, the type of energy produced by incineration does not qualify as “renewable” under the Green Energy Act’s Feed In Tariff program. It isn’t “green” either. No matter how one colours it, it isn’t worth any amount of money paid by any program.
The mayor’s statement makes me think that it is only the money that could be made from this dirty project (as told to council by Partners Energy Group, the Belize based company partnering with the Municipality of Meaford) that he is interested in. To heck with how it would affect the health and well being of the residents of Meaford. This project should be garbaged now. It is simply wrong under moral reasons to even think of proceeding one step further. Surely after attending the MAGG meeting January 6th,2012, you couldn’t possibly consider going ahead with this madness.
Mr. Richardson, what part of TOXIC don’t you understand???!!
