As someone who has been involved in promoting Meaford in various capacities for 20 years (and as a member of the strategic planning committee Lino Toncic lauded more than once last Friday), I admire Mr. Toncic's desire to improve our downtown and his willingness to actually invest in the community.
I also appreciate his recognition of what Meaford already has going for it - the many attractions that draw residents and visitors to Meaford Heritage architecture is one of those attractions.
Obviously it's ridiculous to suggest that Mr. Toncic has torn down buildings without a demolition permit. But magnifying these rumours draws attention from a simple fact: getting a demolition permit in Meaford is an easy, perfunctory process.
Currently municipal staff has no tools in place to allow Council and the community to evaluate and consider what might be ripped down, and demolition permits are issued as a matter of course. None of the recent demolitions in town required transparency or included municipal or public input.
As councillor and long-time Meaford businessman Mike Poetker noted in January, "When you start removing [heritage buildings], you're starting to pull the underpinnings out from one of our very basic economic drivers - tourism."
Absolutely, let's improve Meaford. But in the process, we mustn't carelessly remove the assets we already have.
