The Hidden Truth Regarding Wind Power in Ontario
Recent remarks by Meaford’s Mayor Richardson, and Christine Silvester’s letter of April 2, are sparring around information, from various sources, about wind turbines. Such debates, with the potential for “interpretation” and “counter argument”, are potentially never-ending.
Unfortunately, the most significant point about wind power in Ontario, well known by all informed, technically- competent specialists, is seldom even discussed in the Public domain. The factual reality is that the availability of wind power in Ontario (seasonal and daily pattern) is completely mismatched to Ontario’s electrical demand.
When we need the wind it’s seldom available. When it is available, we usually don’t need it. As a result, wind does not displace any significant amount of fossil generation, and, without the addition of extremely-expensive storage capability, it never will. Usually wind displaces nuclear and hydro generation which are emission free anyway.
Furthermore, because of the practical realities of operating the system, the planned and largely-committed overbuilding of wind generation capacity will lead to significant reduction of nuclear generation, to be replaced by generation from natural gas. Thus, the inevitable result of the already-committed overbuilding of wind farms is that not only will electricity costs rise dramatically, but CO2 emissions will actually increase.
These are practical facts, not subject to counter-argument or interpretation. There is no environmental benefit to offset the many known negatives such as economics, environmental blight, and medical uncertainties. That’s what the Public discourse should be about. The people of Ontario have been sold, and continue to be sold, a complete bill of goods. This has to stop.
