Democracy is far from dead, and thank you for your fine piece, but I think we can do more to improve democratic response input here in Meaford.
Are we as a community doing enough to inform our elected representatives of our views?
In future, how can we ensure that Council learns of all our views, not just of those who are most vocal?
The Meaford Independent has a fine tool that suggests a means of accomplishing these objectives.
My suggestion is to enhance the Town website, in a similar manner, to allow residents to register their opinion.
Do as the Independent does, and present questions or issues up for consideration by Council. Provide a PIN for a single vote on each issue and let our Council know - easily and frequently - where we stand.
Not quite the same as a referendum, but that could grow from this approach.
To keep this inexpensive, the PIN could appear on property tax bills ( avoiding the cost of a separate mailing ) - renters could phone in for theirs.
Council would be better informed, and residents would have a simple tool to record their feelings.
