Dear Editor:
It's time to get a Kolapore Wilderness Plan together
Thanks to Doug Nadler (January 10, 2010) for bringing people's attention to the Kolapore. I am a member of Friends of the Kolapore, an interest group formed as a result of the latest Paradise Springs water taking proposal.
FOK is ramping up to create a collaborative park planning process which will ensure that The Kolapore is protected for generations to come. We recognize that the wilderness has many values and functions - including the recreational opportunities it provides to snowmobilers, quad and mountain bikers, hunters, rock climbers and campers - the economic values for foresters and tourism operators - the educational value to families and tourists, and of course, the all important values of ecosystem integrity and function.
But many of these human uses are in conflict with each other as well as impacting on the pristine natural environment.
Unofficial "stewards" of the Kolapore live in and around the area, and toil hard to protect it. But the more attention that is focused on the area, the more important it becomes to develop a proper plan. It is timely that we get together, with our local Councillor - a strong supporter of the Kolapore, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Conservation Authority and the Town to get the plan developed and implemented.
As a resident of The Blue Mountains who is very fortunate to live at one of the lesser known Gateways to the Kolapore, I encourage interested people to get in touch with me if you are willing to help develop a plan that will protect the area for eternity.
