Meaford Won't Quit!

Dear Editor

It’s not financial fairy dust; it’s downright hard work and community cohesion that is going to keep this train on track. Despite efforts to derail honest to goodness hard work.

Meaford has been hard at work recovering from past years of financial mismanagement and economic inactiveness at a municipal level. In years and decades past when Meaford required stalwart leadership and direction it wasn’t there. Instead there existed a passive attitude that all would be as it is now, then. Well, there is no such thing as standing still, you’re either moving forward or going backwards… and now having gone through years falling behind the competition we are living the “then” that we thought could never be possible.

As citizens of this Municipality we are allowed to criticize and thank god we do. Criticism is a good healthy thing; but it must be done in the spirit of continual improvement and it must be done constructively. Non-constructive forms of criticism are derived from blatant self interest and do not improve anything for the whole.

This is not the time to criticize the work that is being done in an attempt to derail Meaford, nor is it the time to try to stab and reopen the old fissures in this community. Nor do I and a good many citizens who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to heal the old wounds think there is every a time or place to be negative when it is this same negativity that caused our current woes to be so pronounced.

Meaford is what it is, and has what it has. We must work together with whoever is available and utilize our individual and combined powers to fix what is broken, no matter the task.

We’ve been faced with hurdles that we knew about and some that have come from left field, and yet even though we are not quite there the infrastructure and resources are in place to enable us to work through the difficult times.

I must say that I am very optimistic about Meaford’s future, and I’m not an optimistic person. I’m a pessimist until the conditions of my pessimism afford me the opportunity to be an optimist… And right now Meaford has many things to be optimistic about. However, we must ignore the negative slandering and veiled efforts to derail this Municipality. Truthfully, negative comments represent only self seeking interests in the end.

There is more riding on our future than there is on our past, let’s work together to fulfill our common goals, no matter how bloodied and bruised we will be, Meaford won’t quit!
