Dear Editor,
Re: Reader Unhappy With Changes to Waste Collection;
In response to David Rose I would like to clear up a few misunderstandings about the new waste collection policy. I think it is a fabulous idea as it will encourage waste diversion. It is a small thing we can do for our environment that will make a big difference.
The Province of Ontario has asked all municipalities to increase their diversion rates with a target of 60% diversion. This is a hefty order, but it is doable! I would like for it to be noted that the Municipality also sent notices by mail which I received and not just a notice in the Express.
I think all of us need a little education on how to properly recycle and compost - I update myself regularly in case I have missed something and to verify if any new materials can be diverted. If you are properly diverting your household waste you will notice that your garbage doesn't stink. This is because compostable materials - all organic waste, including meat, bones and leftovers – are mostly what smells and organics will continue to be picked up every week as they have been for about 10 years.
We can celebrate being one of the first municipalities to initiate this practice! The only other potential smelly items in your garbage can are diapers and pet feces. All fecal waste should be disposed of in the toilet – diapers should be shaken into the toilet before disposed of in the garbage can. If you are properly separating your garbage into recycling, compost and garbage, you will not have a problem with odours at all. I can write from experience since we only put out garbage about once per month and we have a family of five.
All any of us need to do is separate these three waste types into appropriate bins (we use a green bin available from Home Hardware for about $10 for our compost) each and every time we scrape our plates, fix meals, etc. We have a three bin system right under our sink and in both of our bathrooms. I would guess that it takes us approximately 5 minutes extra per day and it is well worth it to know that we are doing the best we can to cut down on our waste to the land fill.
I suggest that anyone outside the urban area get themselves a Green Cone, available at the municipal office. A few months ago we purchased one and we love it. It is about $65 I believe, but well worth it. Now we don't have to even store our compost or take it to the curb - even meat goes right into the cone. It couldn't be easier. We have never had a problem with critters with the Green Cone either. If you aren’t composting now, you will recoup the cost of the Green Cone in a few months by saving on bag tags and garbage bags.
