Dear Editor,
I would like to give support to the Municipal change. I wonder if any of these angry citizens have lived in communities, like Guelph and many other communities, where garbage collection is every two weeks. Actually I realize that they haven’t, as they complain far too quickly without fully evaluating the choice that has been made on our behalf by the Meaford Council and others involved in the decision to change the garbage collection schedule.
First, in response to Doug Beggs, you are correct that the current Municipal website is not user-friendly – that is why they are working on creating a new web portal which will be launched in the near future. The new web portal will contain much more information and be a lot more user friendly than the current website.
In the Municipality’s defence, the change to garbage collection has been featured in the Meaford Express, The Meaford Independent, as well as explained through flyers that went out to every household in the Municipality.
Lack of communication? I think not! What else do you expect them to do? Perhaps hire someone to go door to door to explain the new changes, or call each citizen personally? The Municipality has done everything to educate the public about the changes and I think that citizens need to take some responsibility for the lack of knowledge that they have in regards to what is happening in their own community.
Secondly, the issue about the amount of garbage is nonsense! I live in a family of two (plus a dog), no we do not have kids or babies in diapers. However, we only put out one bag of garbage approximately every three weeks. Now that the garbage change has happened, we plan to do even more to reduce that waste to one bag per month. We do not worry about the smell, as we keep our garbage in our garage where it does not bother anyone.
We have a green cone where the majority of our food scraps are placed and we also put some compost out for Municipal pick-up. We recycle just about everything possible, and we plan to keep ourselves informed so we can learn more about things that we could be doing to further reduce our waste.
Contrary to popular belief, your garbage doesn’t have to stink; nor does your compost. If you practice proper composting and storage of your compost, there should be little odour and little garbage. Also it should be noted, the Municipality has made changes to allow for corrugated cardboard pick-up in the urban area which it didn’t previously have, which I can only imagine makes it easier for those who reside in urban Meaford, as we no longer have to make trips to the Transfer Station. Another change that I highly favour, although you don’t hear anyone thanking the Municipality, they are just taking it for granted.
The garbage schedule changes are not bad. They are good. It is helping people to learn more about recycling and composting processes. It is making us think about what we purchase, and most importantly it is about helping the environment. You know those babies in the diapers? Perhaps we should think about them in the future, continuing producing waste like most people currently do will result in a world of landfills, something that I don’t wish to see.
I think before people are too quick to judge, they need to stop and think about the long term effects that these changes will have.
