Editor,
So now we have a new project underway now, re-branding Meaford. I have several comments to make:
1/ Why? There's nothing wrong with our current logo that a little updating wouldn't fix.
2/ Why bother? The CAO and council don't listen to our input anyway. These days it seems that everything is pre-decided, then put before the public, the public input is ignored, and away we go with more changes that the majority don't want. Then they wonder why we are so apathetic that we don't have people running for council or volunteering.
3/ Every rinky-dink town from here to Timbuktu has a logo and slogan. It does nothing for the town, and most of them mean nothing (Shaped by the Shore? give me a break.) What if we differentiate ourselves by NOT having a slogan. Just...Meaford. What a concept - simple, different, and relaxed. If a slogan doesn't come easily to mind, it feels forced, so there's no point in forcing it. Personally, I like Meaford by the Bay, if we felt that we had to have a slogan.
4/ One thing that the CAO would do well to discover is that Meaford would be much better off without concepts like branding. Some of our community's biggest assets are its friendliness, its non-slickness, and its “folksyness”.
Rather than attempting to turn us into another trendy Blue Mountain village, it would be better to build on the strengths we already have, as opposed to trying to start a whole new brand from scratch. People move here is because it is a relaxed, friendly, pretty town, not pretentious, slick or snooty. If they wanted pretentious, slick or snooty they'd be further east.
Let Council and the CAO know - the silent majority has to start being vocal, so let's stand up and be counted.
