Reader Responds to Meaford Hall Letter

E-mail Print PDF

Editor,

This is in response to Mike Robertson’s recent letter about the Meaford Hall, particularly his statement concerning taxpayers “subsidizing a very small arts community who seem to have taken over the Hall as a personal fiefdom.”

First of all, the arts community in Meaford is not small. In fact there are hundreds of residents of the Municipality of Meaford involved with the arts. Whether it is musicians, visual artists, quilters, potters and other craft people, performing artists or writers, the arts enrich the lives of not only those directly involved but also our community. People are attracted to Meaford to live or to visit, because of our vibrant arts community, the Apple Harvest Craft Show and the events at Meaford Hall being just two examples.

Reader Offers Thoughts About Meaford Hall as Potential Location For Library

E-mail Print PDF

Dear Editor,

I would like to correct one important misconception in Mike Robertson's overall very wise and inspiring letter.

The incredible subsidization and immense debt of Meaford Hall is not in support of Meaford's art community.  It is in support of what is primarily a group of socialites who have taken over the hall in the name of "The Arts".  And the bullying that Mr. Robertson refers to has been primarily against the arts community, driving many of its members and many of our municipality's volunteers out of the hall and some out of Meaford itself.

Reader: Library Belongs at Meaford Hall

E-mail Print PDF

To the Editor,

This is an attempt to clarify my thoughts on the ideal location for a new Library building.

There are many who feel that I am being simplistic, or perhaps a bit addled, when I offer an opinion that  the new library belongs at Meaford Hall.  Some may say that because of the “current uses” of the building,  that such an idea is preposterous.

Usually, this is accompanied by a series of examples of why such an idea is unworkable, why it “can’t” work.  We would not have a functional municipality, a province, or a country, if our forefathers had utilized the word “can’t”  to the extent that today’s entitled special-interest groups seem to use it.
