The Beautiful Joe Heritage Society in association with The Grey-Bruce Arts Collective is looking for an experienced playwright to adapt Margaret Marshall Saunders' novel "Beautiful Joe" into an all ages play that explores the "symbiotic relationships between animals and humans".
The original story about an abused dog as told from the dogs perspective was written by Margaret Marshall Saunders in 1894 and became Canada’s first million selling childrens’ book. The story focuses on the humane treatment of all animals.
The Beautiful Joe Heritage Society recently completed a feasibility study examining the potential impact this project will have on the Meaford community and surrounding areas.
The study, sponsored by the Trillium Foundation, concluded that a theatrical presentation of the novel “Beautiful Joe” will increase the tourism traffic in Meaford and has the potential to evolve into a provincial destination for theatre and the arts. A public reading of the play will be presented this fall in Meaford.
Interested playwrights should submit two examples of their work to: The Grey-Bruce Arts Collective, 180 Harbour Beach Drive, RR#1 Meaford, ON, N4L 1W5 or via email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. If you would like your submission returned to you, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope.
