Meaford Moments: The Town Hall

mfd_hall_canvasAs you stroll down the main street of Meaford, it is impossible to miss the focal point of the town as it towers over the quaint stores and shops.

The Meaford Hall is a beautiful building that stands tall on a corner that connects the livelihood of the main street and the calmness of the harbour.

Though the exterior properties of the hall maintain its historic appearance, the interior is extraordinarily modern. The town hall has come a long way in the past few years through local efforts.

I have fond memories of racing down the narrow hallways of the backstage with my violin clutched under my arm during a Georgian Bay Secondary School concert. Furthermore, I recall the fantastic plays that were put on by local schools and young actors of the Georgian Theatre Festival. The Meaford Hall plays vital roles in the lives of young children and adolescents as they experience art and bond within the community simultaneously.

The Hall has continuously served as the location for the Remembrance Day ceremonies year after year. This is only appropriate as the hall commemorates the lives lost in past wars as the statue of a soldier stands tall at the entrance. The existence of the hall is vital to Meaford as it contains such rich history inside and out.

The facility also provides wonderful opportunities to fill any dull weekend as it hosts many famous musicians such as April Wine in past years and Sarah Harmer this past June. The quality of entertainment is enhanced by the fabulous atmosphere of the hall. The comfortable seating, beautiful art, and wonderful stage all contribute to the enjoyable experience of each performance.

After immense renovations, Meaford Hall has succeeded in providing the town with a facility that incorporates many artistic interests. Not only does the Hall provide live music, engaging theatre, recent films, and local art, it creates a positive atmosphere that accommodates locals and tourists alike.

The large brick building is not only structurally sturdy, it also brings community stability. By serving as an edifice that promotes community participation and involvement, the hall brings residents together under a single roof for many purposes.

There is never a dull evening at the Meaford Hall as the monthly entertainment schedule is jam packed to delight the old and young. By incorporating many mediums of art, the hall reaches the interests of many.

Whether you are a film junkie, have an eye for visual art, or enjoy the dramatic side of live theatre, the Meaford Hall hosts many events that are of interest to all.

So when you stroll down the main street of Meaford or stop on the street corner to make plans with an old friend, don’t overlook the entertainment that is available within our small town. It is always important to support local efforts and to participate in community events.

A life-long resident of Meaford, Stephanie Rennie loves to live in and write about the community of Meaford. Stephanie is working in the Children’s Department of the Meaford Public Library this summer. In the fall she will be completing the final year of a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History at the University of Guelph.

Stephanie is the new Assistant Editor for The Meaford Independent.
