Members of the Bruce County Astronomical Society (BCAS) will meet be setting up telescopes at 9 PM. on Friday September 10th on the soccer field behind Georgian Bay Secondary School in Meaford. You are invited to come and look at the stars with them.
The BCAS has a mission to encourage everyone to enjoy the beauty of the heavens. So this event is free. Grade 9 and 10 science students have been extended a special invitation.
BCAS normally starts off with a tour of constellations using a laser beam. Then, the telescopes will likely be set to look at Jupiter followed by some star clusters like the Wild Duck (M11) the Coathanger and the ET Cluster in Cassiopeia . You should be able to see a couple of double stars like Alcor and Mizar, as well as the double double in Lyra .
Parking is available in the school parking lot. Dress warmly for the cool, damp evening air. Cover your flashlight with red plastic so that it does not interfere with your night vision.
Members of BCAS will be at the Meaford Farmers’ Market from 3-7 PM on September 10th sharing lots of information and beautiful photos. Your children as well as you will enjoy the exhibit.
The event at GBSS will be cancelled if the sky is cloudy on Friday September 10th but the BCAS will be doing a sky tour beginning at dusk at the Grey Roots Museum on Sept. 11, which you could attend instead. The Grey Roots Museum is situated on Grey County Road 18, about a kilometer west of Rockford. There is no charge for this event.
