Excitement is in the air at the EcoInhabit barn on Old Highway 26 in Meaford, in anticipation of the official grand opening of The Market (formerly The 100 Mile Market) this weekend.

For three months the new owners, husband and wife teams Kara and Rob Wildeman and Jan and Tim Singbeil have been busy moving, renovating, and stocking the shelves with plenty of locally-grown produce. The four bought the business back in June from Barbara Kay who was ready to turn her attention elsewhere.

Kara Wildeman says the store will continue to support local producers and food processors. In addition it will stock foods that are unavailable locally and will include lots of organic choices. There are also plans to put in a coffee bar and a small commercial kitchen with take-away service. In the future the owners envision some on-site gardens and a learning centre for children.

The grand opening of The Market happens this Saturday and Sunday (October 1st and 2nd). A barbeque will be fired up to grill some local meats, and several vendors, including Meredith Cowan of Meredith’s Ginger Syrup and Bo Penny from Penny Lane Organics, will be on hand to offer samples.

Pasture-raised meats, local organic eggs, fresh goat cheese, goat and sheep’s milk, fresh fish, honey, maple syrup, grains and baking supplies are just some of the products available at the store.

The Market is one of several local food stores in Grey Bruce looking out for the environment and stimulating the local economy by keeping the money at home.
