The giant pumpkins being grown by a local farmer are continuing to grow, though not without an occasional hiccup.
There was a minor upset caused by a porcupine who visited several nights in a row leaving teethmarks behind on one of the large pumpkins. The wounds were with hydrogen peroxide and they have dried up and fortunately there is no sign of mould.
On August 16th, the circumferences of the two pumpkins were 9 feet 11 inches and 11 feet. This is an increase of 38 inches in the larger pumpkin since August 4th. That is growth of over three inches a day.
On August 4th, the pair weighed an estimated 200 lbs. each. Now, the larger one weighs about 500 lbs. and the other about 460 lbs. The pumpkins have more than doubled their weight in twelve days.
The pumpkins have been named Lord and Lady Maximus in hopes that they will beat last year’s record of 1678 pounds at Port Elgin’s Pumpkinfest held in October.
