The pumpkins are not quite large enough for Cinderella’s fairy godmother to use them as a Coach but they are growing at a fast pace.
As of August 24, 2010 Terry’s two Giant Pumpkins weighed in at 500 and 650 pounds. This means that the larger one put on about 150 pounds in the last eight days. That is growth of more than 18 pounds a day!
On August 16th, they weighed about 460 and 500 pounds. On August 4th , they weighed about 200 pounds.
The pumpkins dubbed 'Lord and Lady Maximus Pumpkinus' are going to be entered into the Giant Vegetable Contest held in Port Elgin in October. Last year’s winning pumpkin weighed 1678 pounds. ( See www.pumpkinfest.org )
There was some excitement near the pumpkins this week when a swarm of bees arrived looking for a place to set up a hive. A local beekeeper, Richard Elzby, set up a hive nearby. Then, he successfully bagged the swarm and put them in the hive. They are now happily producing honey.
