1,000 Pounds of Pumpkin

E-mail Print PDF

chappelle_pumpkinThe crowds cheered when Meaford farmer, Terry Chappelle's pumpkin weighed in at 1055 pounds at Pumpkinfest in Port Elgin on October 2, 2010.

There were larger pumpkins that day- the winning entry was a 1,618 pound mammoth from Quebec - but Chappelle was pleased that this one grew to over 1,000 pounds.

Transporting a huge pumpkin is no easy task. Chappelle used his tractor to load the pumpkin onto a trailer that he then drove from his Meaford farm to Port Elgin.

Terry’s brother videotaped the unloading and actual weighing of Lord Maximus at Port Elgin. You can watch the video on YouTube by ">clicking here.

The pumpkin managed to put on 855 lbs in two months or over 14 lbs a day. Here is its growing history:

  • On September 15th, the giant pumpkin weighed about 950 pounds.

  • On September 8th, it weighed about 850 pounds

  • On August 31st, 750 pounds.

  • On August 24th, 650 pounds.

  • On August 16th, 500 pounds.

  • On August 4th, 200 pounds.

Photos from the event will be available on the website for The Giant Vegetable Growers of Ontario. Visit: http://www.gvgo.ca/.
