Members of the Rotary Club of Meaford pitched in on Tuesday morning to help the Golden Town Outreach Food Bank move out of the Legion building, and into their new home at the Church of the Nazarene building on Trowbridge Street.
As was reported in The Independent previously, though the GTO was planning to begin a search for a new home beginning in the new year, they were forced to find a new location earlier than expected when the furnace at the Legion building malfunctioned and was deemed to be unrepairable.
There are plans in the works to demolish the current Legion facility to make way for a new hall as well as a 36 unit apartment building.
Phil Cant, past president of the Meaford Rotary Club told The Independent that his organization has always been a strong supporter of the local food bank.
“Though we are an international organization, the Rotary believes in doing things that are community based,” said Cant.
In addition to helping with the move, Cant said that the Rotary Club also bought some paint and recruited half a dozen members to paint the walls at the new food bank location prior to moving day.
“We had one painter and five supervisors,” joked Cant, “We are a white collar club.”
With the space freshly painted and the shelves, furnishings, and boxes of food moved, the next job for the Golden Town Outreach is to get everything put back together and ready for when the food bank resumes operation on January 4.
