Once again this year the Meaford Chamber of Commerce is spearheading preparations for Canada Day celebrations throughout the municipality.
After successfully bringing together a wide range of community groups for last year's recognition of Canada's birthday, the Chamber is again calling upon local organizations who want to participate by holding events and activities over the Canada Day long weekend.
Shirley Keaveney, Chamber President told The Independent in a recent interview that this year's celebration will be even bigger than last year.
“It will be bigger. Last year we just did one day, and this year we're doing the whole weekend,” said Keaveney.
Canada Day festivities will kick off this year on Friday afternoon (June 29) at the Meaford Farmers' Market which will feature live local music and surrey rides in addition to their offering of the best produce and food products that the area has to offer.
Festivities kick into high gear on Saturday June 30 beginning with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Military Resource Centre in Market Square, a BIA Sidewalk Sale, and a scavenger hunt. Also on the Saturday a Soap Box Derby will be held on the Collingwood Street hill, and the annual Meaford Duck Race will take place on the river.
On July 1, there will be an antique car show along Bayfield Street throughout the day. At noon a parade will be held along Sykes Street which will proceed to the flag pole at the harbour where local dignitaries will address those gathered, and local musical act the Honey Hammers will sing the national anthem.
Once again the Rotary Club will be serving food and beverages under the harbour pavilion throughout the day, and a large cake will provide a sweet snack for as many as 1,000 people.
A free concert will also be held at the harbour on July 1.
Live music and a variety of other activities, along with displays by the military and emergency services will be taking place throughout the municipality will lead into the annual fireworks display provided by the local Kinsmen Club.
Keaveney says that the Canada Day events are still in the planning stages, and announcements will be forthcoming.
Local organizations wanting to participate can contact the Chamber of Commerce office, and the next planning meeting will take place on May 22 at 7 pm at the Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre.
