In 2011 the Municipality of Meaford logged 986.25 hours, and this year Meaford would like to beat that record and has set a goal of 1500 hours in the annual Longest Day of PLAY event.
The municipality is calling on residents to help reach that goal by participating in one of the various activities next Thursday June 21. Participants can also log onto the PLAY website www.playbrucegrey.com and individually log hours for that day.
With so many options in Meaford, the municipality says that there’s no excuse not to PLAY: free swimming at Blue Dolphin Pool, a harbor walk/run, an indoor walk at the community centre, free mini-golf from 4-5pm at Memorial Park, drop-in games at Blossom Fitness, and to top it all off you can join Mayor Francis Richardson on a bike ride of Georgian Trail.
“PLAY is committed to promote physical activity every day, whether it be an organized event or just going to play outside with family. It makes our community happier and healthier, without being costly. And it is also supposed to be fun!” says Amber Knott, Community Services with the Municipality of Meaford.
PLAY marks the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. The Longest Day of PLAY is a community based challenge designed to encourage Grey Bruce residents to get more active. Trophies will be awarded to the municipalities who log the most number of PLAY hours by percentage of population.
Grey Bruce municipalities are organizing activities including hikes, games, swimming, food and giveaways. Additionally, both the Bluewater District and the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Boards have joined the challenge with individual schools making plans to get students up and moving throughout the day.
“Building on the momentum from last year, we certainly expect this to be a big event for many years to come. Grey Bruce can take pride in knowing the Longest Day of PLAY has captured the attention of national groups such as ParticipACTION and CBC’s Live Right Now.” said Jason Weppler, Health Promoter at the Grey Bruce Health Unit. “Grey Bruce is a great place to live, work and PLAY and we need residents to be more active. Only about 50% of Grey Bruce residents are active on a regular basis and 62% are considered overweight or obese.”
