The Canadian Cancer Society set up shop at the Rotary Harbour Pavilion on Saturday for the annual Cops For Cancer event.
And while the shaving off of a head of hair might not have helped participants feel any cooler with the high temperatures Saturday, the funds raised from the event do help many in a time of need.
One of the participants in this year's event was Meaford Councillor Lynda Stephens who told The Independent, that for her, taking part in Cops For Cancer is important to her for many reasons.
“This year I'm doing it in honour of a friend's cancer journey,” said Stephens who was participating in the event for the third time, “It is an interesting journey when it comes to cancer, and losing your hair, especially for a woman. It's very, very devastating, it challenges you for who you are as a person, for your identity, and when I did this the first time it was because two of my friends who I grew up with in grade school both had cancer, and I wanted to support them.”
Stephens said that she found it interesting that she herself went through mixed emotions after having her head shaved bald. The experience taught her a lot about herself, and those that are in treatment for cancer.
“It's a very scary place, you go inside yourself, and you need to be able to talk,” offered Stephens.
The $160 that Stephens had raised for the event was matched by Meaford Mayor Francis Richardson, making her total contribution this year $320.
More than $2,500 was raised at the Saturday event, and with the many events held at other locations organizers expect to raise in the neighbourhood of $10,000 by the autumn.
Another big contributor on Saturday was Meaford teenager Taylor Campbell, who rather than having her head shaved, offered to have her long locks cut off for use in human hair wigs for cancer patients. In addition to the donation of her hair, she also raised over $680 for the cause.
The day prior, students at St. Vincent Euphrasia Elementary School raised more than $4,000 for Cops For Cancer.
