Notes From The Olympics: The Countdown

E-mail Print

van_olympics_countdownThe clouds gently caress the mountain tops as they wisp by. The sun gradually poking through, beginning to warm the day and welcome the world to this mountain oasis.

Athletes from around the world are beginning to converge in colourful uniforms representing not only their country but their hard work and dedication to 15 designated winter Olympic sports.

Teams such as Russia, Latvia, Italy, The US, Czech Republic, Canada, Ghana, Argentina, Poland, India and more are in attendance to create a total of 80+ countries and over 5500 athletes and officials participating in the XXI Olympic Games.

My experience thus far has been amazing. I have met people from all around the world, all with a smile, a kind word and usually a pin to trade. My team at the Whistler Sliding Centre (WSC) began to form our solid bond during our first day of training that took place Tuesday at the WSC track.

We were introduced to the intricacies of the luge, bobsleigh and skeleton events, we discussed where and how crashes may occur and how to respond efficiently and effectively when they do. We “walked the track” (literally in spiked boots), I was able to touch the ice with my hands where courageous competitors will reach speeds in excess of 100km an hour and stand exactly where world records will soon be set.

With so many varied medical professionals such as paramedics, nurses, doctors and athletic therapists that bring copious amounts of skills and talents to the table; we have formed quite a formidable team of our own.

As the Opening Ceremonies quickly approach, the mood in the Whistler Village is quickly escalating. Many countries are opening hospitality “houses” where anyone and everyone can gather and share in a particular culture and good time...my first date is this weekend at the Slovenia House, where their motto is “I feel Slovenia”. A good party is sure to be had there!

I am sure more parties are quickly to follow where stories will be shared and new friendships made. Friendships that transcend sport, race, gender, culture and religion and that have brought us all together for this 21st Cultural Olympiad. Friendships that will remain once the Olympic torch is extinguished for another 4 years.

Friendships that will remain in the hearts and souls of athletes, officials, coaches, volunteers and Canadians forever. For this experience alone, I will be eternally grateful.

Thank you for following my adventure, please feel free to email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. I look forward to sharing more stories and pictures as the games progress, in the mean time...stay tuned and enjoy!
