Some wonderful and heart-warming happenings are occuring to the man with the guitar who roams the Meaford Farmers’ Market at the Harbour Pavilion on Friday afternoons.
When he catches the eye of an adult, he may walk towards them singing an Elvis tune. With children, he may encourage them to strum a little on his guitar.
His objective is to make people smile.
Last Friday, he was delighted to have three men spontaneously join in and harmonize on several verses of “5 foot 2, eyes of blue”. Afterward, everyone in the marketplace applauded in appreciation.
Meaford resident Ray Newland taught himself to play a guitar when he was seventeen. Then, he started his own rock ‘n roll band. Later, he and his family played jazz in country clubs. He and his son played the instruments with his wife as lead singer and occasional songs from his daughter.
So, if you come down to the Farmers’ Market between 3 and 7 PM on Fridays, Ray might croon your favorite song for you.
