As the week winds down on a nice Sunday night many people are relaxing and enjoying the remaining moments of the weekend. Though it may seem like all of the fun of the weekend is over and the only thing left to look forward to (or dread) is the chaotic Monday morning that lies ahead, the Friends of the Library have a different agenda for Sunday evenings all summer long.
Every Sunday evening of the summer the Friends of the Library host concerts at the Rotary Harbour Pavilion starting at 7pm. The admission of the concerts is by donation with the proceeds assisting the Meaford Public Library.
The relaxing atmosphere of the concerts is accomplished by the soothing melodies and the picturesque view of the calming water. The fantastic concerts bring excitement to a typically uneventful Sunday evening and allow for one last hoorah before the work week begins.
The variety of music has spanned from Caribbean beats to jazz to country to classics from the ‘70s. There is something for everyone. Each and every week the beautiful music produced by talented musicians has swept over the Meaford harbour.
The summer line up for the concerts has been outstanding as many talented local musicians have taken the stage. Some of these musicians include; Waverley Rice and Bayview Country, Mike Robertson, Beverley Taft, Allan Johnson, The Valley Concert Band, Grey County Country, Jennifer Robertson, Bored of Education, and lastly Bob Butchart and his friends.
Many thanks are extended to the talented musicians that dedicate their Sunday evenings to performing for eager attendees. Moreover, thanks are extended to the supporters of the concerts whose attendance is appreciated by the people that make this happen. And of course, without the Friends of the Library none of this would be possible so a thousand thanks is given to these hard working and dedicated people.
But what are the Friends of the Library?
The Friends of the Library have eagerly supported the Meaford Public Library since the formation of the committee in 1993. The Friends are comprised of volunteers that dedicate their valuable time to different fundraising initiatives.
Not only do the Friends put on a weekly concert throughout the warm months of the summer, they are the heart and soul of the Net Shed. The Net Shed is a gently used book shop on Bayfield Street that sells books by donation only. The proceeds of the sales directly support the local library.
Moreover, the Friends of the Library are responsible for two bake sales each year taking place both during the summer and at Christmas. Last year, the proceeds of the Christmas bake sale alone provided the library with new computer monitors.
We are all aware of the absolute importance of the Meaford Public Library. It is one of the most necessary places in our town that provides us with the key to learning that is essential.
But we must take the time to recognize the very people that make that happen. Not only the staff of the library, but the dedicated volunteers behind many fundraising initiatives. The Friends of the Library provide an essential support system for a place that is of utmost importance in our town.
This Sunday evening, Bob Butchart and his friends will perform the finale to an amazingly successful series of concerts. So whether you are hoping to fill the quiet hours of a Sunday evening, or are interested in supporting the Friends’ initiatives in any way (or both!), head down to the final concert of the summer at the Meaford Rotary Pavilion by the harbour on Sunday August 22nd at 7pm.
