cruiser_lights_225A 55 year old Meaford man was treated for a gun shot wound to his left leg after the firearm he was doing maintenance work on accidentally discharged.

On Friday, February 3, 2012 at approximately 6:15 p.m. Grey County OPP was called by staff at the Meaford Hospital to attend the hospital after a man had arrived with a gun shot wound to his leg.

The injury was not life threatening. He was treated and released from hospital.

Police learned that the injured man was doing maintenance work on his .22 calibre Smith and Wesson revolver at his residence in Meaford when it discharged, causing an injury to his leg. He was able to perform first aid then called a neighbour to assist him to get to the hospital.

There were no other persons inside the residence at the time of the incident. The firearm was registered to the victim.

The Chief Firearms Office is investigating.
