The new president of the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Federal Liberal Association Judy Gay is calling for support of an Owen Sound rally January 23.
The rally is part of a growing national anti-prorogation campaign demanding that our MP's ignore Prime Minister Stephen Harper's suspension of parliament, and return to work on Monday January 25th as previously scheduled.
The event is part of a Canada-wide campaign and is being organized by the Owen Sound chapter of Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament that grew out of a grassroots protest on the social networking site Facebook.
The Grey-Bruce rally is scheduled for 1pm on Saturday January 23 at the Owen Sound riding office of Conservative MP Larry Miller at 1131 3rd Avenue East opposite The Beer store.
Gay says “this is an excellent opportunity to show we oppose Harper's tactics.” Under the suspension, Parliament has been adjourned for 22 days since December 30th.
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has said “this is a man who has prorogued Parliament twice in one year...its a one man show he is a control freak.” Ignatieff added “there has never been a cabinet so under the domination of the Prime
Minister's office. We don't think that's good for Canadian democracy.”
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Liberal candidate Kim Love calls the suspension an unprecedented grasp for power by a Prime Minister who abuses the traditions of parliament, in order to avoid accountability on the Afghan detainee torture scandal. Love who will speak at the January 23rd rally, says the Harper government is so shrouded in secrecy it is the least transparent in our lifetime.
She reminds us of a 2005 quote from Harper who said “when a government starts trying to cancel dissent or avoid dissent, is frankly when its rapidly losing its moral authority to govern”. Says Love “Harper needs to follow his own advice.”`
