Miller and Walker Need to Recognize Treaty Responsibilities to First Nations People

This phrase appeared on posters across Canada at Idle No More rallies - We Are All Treaty People - and yet while many can agree with this concept it seems that for Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller and MPP Bill Walker, it is impossible to uphold Canada’s duty to treaty rights, or First Nations’ interests in general, when it conflicts with their own personal interests - that of non-Indigenous Canadians.

For weeks we have witnessed the debate surrounding the agreement between Saugeen Ojibway Nation and the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable David Oriazetti. This past weekend members of the most vocal group opposing the agreement gathered to make their voices heard.

Community Association Offers Input on Official Plan Review

The Meaford Area Community Association (MACA) is a properly constituted community organization that began operation in February 2012. In our first year we focused on acquiring skills and knowledge concerning local community issues such as Wind Turbine setbacks, Waste diversion and attending and posing questions at Council meetings.

Also, MACA personnel have participated in the ongoing Meaford Official Plan (OP) Review that brings the old 2005 OP up-to-date. To assist in the endeavour, Liz Buckton the Planner for Meaford, kindly came to our Board meeting in October 2012 to clarify what the Official Plan is, and to explain the Review process. She recommended that MACA focus its attention on section (A) "Goals and Strategic Objectives" which include policy statements that set the tone and direction for the Plan. In November she provided MACA with a document comparing the 2005 OP and the proposed updates.

Stephen Harper by Remy Steinegger Stephen Harper is emerging as the Mackenzie King of Canada's 21st Century.

If Harper wins re-election as prime minister in 2015, as seems likely, at least at the head of a minority government, he can remain in that office as long as his conservative political coalition holds together, possibly until the early 2030s.
