Reader Hears From Mayor After Letter to TMI

Mr. Editor,

As a result of my recent letter in the Independent about the Policing proposals, I received a very polite but firm response from Mayor Richardson.  It seems like my criticism of staff was misdirected. He states, “We have an excellent, professional, staff that is doing a superb job for our community.  They do not deserve to be criticized for carrying out directions that have been given to them by council.”

I was informed that any comments, concerns or criticisms be directed to council, not to staff.

Voter Concerned About Electronic-Only Voting

Dear Editor,

There is an election coming that will use pin numbers and electronic ballots, or touch-tone phones.  I can cope with this, I can use a computer and I have touch-tone phones.  However I do know there are people in the municipality that have neither of these things.  I hear some muttering, “I guess I just won’t vote.”

Internet connections in parts of Meaford and Grey County are spotty at best, and not every household has a computer. Not everyone in the households with computers know how to operate them. If someone has to ask their spouse or child how to vote, that vote isn’t very secret. I have it on good authority that there are more than a few party lines out there.  There goes the secret ballot again.  The residents in the long term nursing facility are going to be able to vote with computers and pin numbers and municipal staff assisting them.  Again, not very secret, but apparently confidential.  Why not let them vote with the sort of paper ballots they are used to?

Meaford's OPP Cost Increases Appear Minimal If At All

Editor,

What follows is an Open Letter to Meaford Staff and Council regarding Policing Costs:

Background

In a "News Release" published in the Meaford Independent on August 18, Meaford Treasurer Darcy Chapman asserted that the billing for OPP police services would rise from the current $1,772,053 by $455,647 to $2,277,000 next year. At that time, the details of the new billing model were not known to the general public. The precise details were released in a presentation to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) on Monday 18th. Once the details were reviewed, we saw that Mr Chapman had made an assumption and his calculations, we believe, are incorrect. We arrive at the overall cost increase of $17,839 as calculated below. To date, Mr Chapman has not issued a correction to his calculation of the OPP cost increase, therefore we feel compelled to challenge his numbers.
